Keeping it funky fresh

Way back in the day floral design was my hobby. I am a big believer in having a hobby that keeps you creative and gives you a fresh outlook on life. When floral design became my career I quickly realized that I needed a hobby outside of my job.

What do I love? I love papers and fabrics (even though I do not sew), I love color, I love home decorating (seasonal and everyday) and I love my family and friends. All of my hobbies reflect these loves. Card making, collecting Dept. 56 Halloween villages, and most recently photography.

I have been dabbling in photographing families and children. It is so fun to step outside what I do everyday and try on a different chapeau. I have been photographing friends and family and friends of friends and family.

Is this a new career in the budding stages? Probably not. I love flowers way too much to ever give them up. But I have found photography gives me a new way to view composition and color. And that new view has made me a better floral designer. Plus I love having a new way to express my artistic side.

How to make a Harrison cake...

My son Harrison put together the following recipe as part of a class project:

Harrison cake

7 cups video games
9 cups skateboarding
4 cups black hair
4 cups knowledge
6 cups awesome
10 cups athleticism

Start the blender and warm the oven to 400 degrees. While the oven is warming you can start blending the ingredients. Combine video games, skateboarding, black hair, knowledge, awesome and athleticism. Blend for 5 minutes, place in a pan and put it all in the oven for 15 minutes. There you go! You have made a Harrison cake.

Shannon and Jim- established 1990

Now Touch the Air Softly
By William Jay Smith

Now touch the air softly,
Step gently. One, two....
I love you till roses
Are robin's egg blue;
I'll love you till gravel
Is eaten for bread,
And lemons are oranges,
And lavender's red.

Now touch the air softly,
Swing gently the broom.
I'll love you till windows
are all of a room;
And the table is laid,
And the table is bare,
And the ceiling is reposes
On bottomless air.

I'll love you till heaven
Rips the stars from his coat,
And the moon rows away in
A glass-bottom boat;
And Orion steps down
Like a diver below,
And earth is ablaze,
And Ocean aglow.

So touch the air softly,
And swing the broom high.
We will dust the gray mountains,
And sweep the blue sky;
And I'll love you as long
As the furrow the plow,
As However is ever,
And Ever is Now.

I have always loved this poem. It is so romantic. My husband and I used a passage from this poem on our wedding invitations. We also had our officiant read the poem during our wedding ceremony. A couple of years ago I gave my husband a new wedding ring with "and ocean aglow" inscribed inside. My husband and I do not really have a "song". But this poem is certainly "ours"

Guess I am just feeling sentimental!

How to be a Florist by Evan

My seven year old son, Evan wrote the following passage for a project in his second grade class. It makes me smile every time I read his sweet take on what his Mom does every day. I plan on framing this and hanging it in my office.

How to be a Florist

First you need whatever kinds of flowers you want. Next cut off the thorns and put them in the garbage. Then wrap tape around the flowers. Finally, put a diamond on top and then you are ready to deliver the flowers.

Some randomness

I have been having so much fun with the Nikon I bought last year. I have even been photographing friends and family's children.

I love the ability to capture vignettes of world around me. When I am designing with flowers I am telling a story that I create. When I am photographing I am capturing the story as it unfolds.

Very sweet gift

I just had to share the Mother's Day bouquet my 7 year old brought to me. He went in the back yard and harvested our very best weeds. He then arranged them in one of my antique bottles and presented the finished design to me with a flourish.
I love this arrangement like I love peonies in spring.
